FAST CROCHET PROJECT
I love fast little crochet projects that I can work up in an evening. And this baby hat works up SO quickly – even for beginners.
It's an easy pattern too: you'll begin with the crown of the hat, which is made up of double crochet stitches, before moving on to the main body of the hat.
When working this section you'll use the Piqué stitch to create a very attractive texture.
The Piqué stitch is made up from a special cluster stitch (SPcl), which is a combination of a double crochet and half double crochet all worked into the same stitch. Don't worry – it's not difficult to do!
Finally, single crochet stitches will be made along the bottom resulting in a simple trim for your baby hat.
SWEET BABY SET
This easy crochet baby hat is part of a set. There's a matching cardigan, a pair of adorable little baby booties, and a soft and squishy baby blanket
Of course, it's not necessary to make all of these items… any new mom would be delighted to just receive the handmade hat – an item that I think babies can never have enough of!
YARN REQUIRED
To make this easy crochet baby hat you'll need #3 / light-worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn.
I used around 1.2oz.(35g) of yarn, so you can make several hats from one ball of yarn!
And if you have any leftover yarn lying around (I'm sure, like me, you have loads!) then this is the perfect project to use up some of that stash.
I used Deramores Studio Baby Soft DK Acrylic to make my hat but you can use any brand of category 3 yarn.
I particularly like Deramores Baby yarn as it's anti-pilling, machine washable and is so soft with a lovely, subtle sheen to it. The selection of colours on offer is gorgeous also.

LEVEL
Easy. For details of project levels, please see the Craft Yarn Council.
SUPPLIES
- Yarn: Category #3 / light worsted / DK / 8 ply yarn. I used 1.2 oz. / 35g approx. from 1 skein /ball of
Deramores Studio Baby Soft DK Acrylic, 360 yds / 3.5 oz (330m / 100g). - Crochet hook: Newborn G (4mm); 0–3 months Size 7 (4.5mm); 3–6 months H (5mm).
- Yarn needle (the bent tip makes sewing and weaving in ends much easier).
- Scissors (super sharp… and pretty).
- (Optional): 2.5″ (6cm) Pom pom maker (this one is really easy to use)
GAUGE / TENSION
To check your gauge / tension, work the first five rounds of the pattern below.
To check that you're okay for size, the diameter of your baby hat should measure as follows:
Newborn (G / 4mm hook): 4.25" (11cm) approx.
0–3 months (SIze 7 / 4.5mm hook): 4.75″ (12cm)
3–6 months (H / 5mm hook): 5.25″ (13cm)
FINISHED SIZE
Newborn: W – 6" (15cm) x L – 5" (13cm)
0 – 3 months: W – 6.5 (16cm) x L – 5.5" (14cm)
3 – 6 months: W – 7" (17.5cm) x L – 6" (15cm)

PATTERN NOTES
- US crochet terminology used throughout.
- There is one set of instructions for sizes newborn, 0-3 months & 3-6 months.
- Use the hook size according to the size of hat that you wish to make (see above).
- The hat is made in rounds.
- Rounds 1 – 5: The ch2 made at the beginning of the round counts as the first dc of the round. Therefore, you should join the round by making a slip stitch into the top of this beginning ch2.
- Rounds 6 – 14: The ch3 does not count as the first stitch of the round. Therefore, you should make the first stitch of the round in the same stitch (at the base of the ch3). At the end of rounds, do not join with a slip stitch into the top of the ch3. Instead, slip stitch into the first stitch of the round to join.
- For rounds 6 – 14 (main body of hat) you will turn your work at the end of each round. This creates a more pronounced, raised texture.
